The Common Law Admission Test, better known as ๐‚๐‹๐€๐“, is one of the most important law entrance examinations in India for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate law programmes at National Law Universities and other participating institutions.

CLAT tests a combination of reading, comprehension, reasoning, application, awareness, decision-making, and time management.

Over the years, I have seen students with very different backgrounds, abilities, and preparation levels appear for CLAT. Some struggle because they do not know what to study. Some study a lot but do not analyse their performance. Some perform well in practice but fail to convert that performance into their final examination.

This is why I believe that

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national-level law entrance examination conducted for admission to participating National Law Universities.

For undergraduate aspirants, CLAT is primarily associated with admission to five-year integrated law programmes.

However, understanding what CLAT is goes beyond knowing the name of the examination.

A student preparing for CLAT needs to understand what the examination actually tests.

Unlike many conventional examinations, CLAT is not primarily about remembering everything that you have studied.

You may know the information, but if you cannot understand a passage quickly, identify the relevant information, apply a principle, analyse an argument or manage your time, that knowledge may not translate into marks.

That is why I have always looked at CLAT as an aptitude-based examination requiring continuous skill development.

Legal Reasoning has been an important part of my teaching and writing over the years.

After spending more than a decade teaching and mentoring CLAT aspirants, I do not believe that there is one timetable, one book, or one preparation formula that will work equally well for every student.

A student who is beginning preparation early has a different requirement from someone who has only a few months left.

A student who is already strong in reading may need to focus more on accuracy and practice, while another student may first need to build basic reading skills.

A student scoring well in mocks may need a completely different strategy from a student who is struggling to cross a particular score.

This is why I believe in personalised preparation rather than blindly following someone else's strategy.

For me, good CLAT preparation is built around a simple cycle:

๐”๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ → ๐๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ž → ๐€๐ง๐š๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ž → ๐ˆ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž → ๐‘๐ž๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐ญ

You study something.

You practise it.

You make mistakes.

You understand those mistakes.

You change your approach.

And then you practise again.

That process, repeated consistently, is what eventually produces improvement.

The first question every aspirant should ask is not:

“How many hours should I study?”

It should be:

“What exactly do I need to improve?”

A good preparation plan should take into account your current level, strengths, weaknesses, available time, and target.

CLAT preparation should gradually bring together:

  • Reading

  • Section-wise preparation

  • Current Affairs

  • Conceptual understanding

  • Question practice

  • Revision

  • Mock tests

  • Mock analysis

The balance between these activities will change as your preparation progresses.

I have written a separate detailed guide on how students can approach CLAT preparation from the beginning.

Preparation and strategy are not the same thing.

Preparation is what you study and practise.

Strategy is about how you use your time, resources, and strengths to maximise your performance.

Your strategy should answer questions such as:

  • What should I prioritise?

  • Which areas need more attention?

  • How should I divide my time?

  • When should I start taking mocks?

  • How should I analyse my performance?

  • How should I approach difficult passages?

  • When should I attempt or leave a question?

  • How should I manage the final months of preparation?

One of the biggest mistakes I see among aspirants is changing their strategy too frequently.

And sometimes you simply need more practice.

Before starting preparation, every aspirant should understand the official CLAT syllabus and examination pattern.

But I would not recommend treating the syllabus simply as a checklist.

Knowing that a particular section exists does not automatically tell you how to prepare for it.

For example, knowing that Legal Reasoning is part of CLAT is different from knowing how to approach a Legal Reasoning passage.

Similarly, knowing that Current Affairs is tested is different from knowing what to read, what to ignore, and how to revise it.

The syllabus tells you what you need to prepare.

Mocks are an important part of CLAT preparation, but I believe students often misunderstand their purpose.

A mock test is not merely a way of finding out whether you scored 70, 80, or 90.

It is a tool for understanding your preparation.

After a mock, you should know:

  • Which questions you got wrong

  • Why you got them wrong

  • Where you lost time

  • Which questions should have been left

  • Whether the problem was conceptual or careless

  • Whether your reading speed affected your performance

  • Whether your attempt strategy worked

Current Affairs is one of the areas where students can easily become overwhelmed.

There is simply too much information available.

My advice is not to try to read everything.

Instead, focus on relevance, understanding and revision.

A good Current Affairs preparation system should help you identify important events, understand their background, connect related developments and revise them regularly.

Reading ten different sources about the same event does not necessarily make your preparation better.

If there is one skill that supports almost every part of CLAT preparation, it is reading.

Reading affects English, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Current Affairs, and your overall ability to manage a paper containing lengthy passages.

But reading for CLAT does not simply mean reading faster.

You need to develop the ability to read with:

  • Attention

  • Comprehension

  • Concentration

  • Speed

  • Accuracy

You should gradually become comfortable reading unfamiliar subjects, different writing styles, and lengthy passages.

This cannot be developed overnight.

Legal Reasoning has been one of the important areas of my work as a CLAT educator and author.

One misconception I regularly encounter is that students need to know a large amount of law before preparing for CLAT.

That is not the right starting point.

The more important skill is the ability to understand a legal principle and apply it to the facts given in the passage.

Students should focus on:

  • Understanding the principle

  • Reading the facts carefully

  • Identifying what is relevant

  • Applying the principle

  • Avoiding assumptions that are not supported by the passage

  • Choosing the most appropriate option

Students often ask me whether it is possible to prepare for CLAT when only 100 days are left.

The answer is yes, but the preparation has to become much more focused.

When you have limited time, you cannot afford to spend weeks trying to study everything available.

You need to identify your priorities.

You need to know your strengths and weaknesses.

You need to practise consistently.

You need to take and analyse mocks.

And you need a clear revision plan.

Yes, it is possible.

But preparing without coaching does not mean preparing without a plan.

A student preparing independently needs to be able to identify the right resources, build a preparation schedule, practise regularly, analyse mocks, and identify weaknesses.

Coaching can provide structure and guidance, but ultimately the student has to do the preparation.

I have seen students succeed through different preparation routes.

My experience of teaching CLAT has also led me to write books for law-entrance aspirants.

I have tried to bring the practical aspects of CLAT preparation into my books so that students have resources they can use during both guided preparation and self-study.

The objective is not simply to provide more content.

Over the years, I have realised that students often need something more than study material.

They need someone who can look at their preparation from the outside and tell them what is working, what is not working, and what needs to change.

That is the idea behind my CLAT Mentorship Programme.

The mentorship focuses on areas such as:

The objective is not to make students dependent on a mentor.

After spending more than 13 years around CLAT, one thing I have learnt is that there is no perfect preparation journey.

Some students start early.

Some discover CLAT much later.

Some are naturally strong readers.

Some need months to become comfortable with passages.

Some improve quickly.

Some take longer.

But almost every student can improve when they have the right direction, consistent practice, and an honest understanding of their own performance.

I do not believe that CLAT preparation should be about studying endlessly.

I believe it should be about studying with purpose.

Know what you are preparing for.

Know why you are making mistakes.

Know what needs improvement.

And most importantly, give yourself enough time to improve.
