𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐃𝐨 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐨 𝐁𝐞 𝐀 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐨 𝐃𝐨 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐈𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Quantitative Techniques is probably one of the most unnecessarily feared sections of CLAT.
The moment students hear the word “Maths”, many of them become uncomfortable.
Some students immediately start thinking:
“I was never good at Maths.”
“I have forgotten everything after Class 10.”
“Maths is not my strength.”
“Can I still crack CLAT?”
My answer is simple.
𝐘𝐞𝐬, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧.
You do not need to be a Maths champion to do well in CLAT Quantitative Techniques.
In fact, one of the biggest mistakes students make is to treat CLAT Quantitative Techniques like a full-fledged Mathematics examination.
It is not.
The section generally forms only around 10% of the overall CLAT examination.
That means you should take it seriously.
But you should not be scared of it.
You do not need to spend your entire CLAT preparation time solving advanced Mathematics questions.
You need to understand what CLAT is actually asking you to do.
And the answer is much simpler than many students think.
𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲.
𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐬.
That is the foundation of CLAT Quantitative Techniques.
𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐐𝐔𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇𝐍𝐈𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐓?
CLAT Quantitative Techniques is primarily based on Data Interpretation, commonly known as DI.
You are generally given a set of information.
That information may be presented in the form of:
• A passage
• A combination of data and information
The questions are based on the information provided.
You are required to first understand the data and then apply basic mathematical concepts to answer the questions.
This is an important point.
𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐓 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬.
It is about understanding information and using Maths where required.
In many questions, the difficult part is not the calculation.
The difficult part is understanding the data correctly.
Students sometimes make a mathematical calculation perfectly but still get the answer wrong because they misunderstood the information given in the DI.
That is why I always tell students:
𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠.
𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲.
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐈𝐆𝐆𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐌𝐘𝐓𝐇 — “𝐈 𝐀𝐌 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐀𝐓 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐒”
I have seen many good CLAT aspirants unnecessarily worry about this section.
They may be good at English.
They may be strong in Legal Reasoning.
They may perform well in Current Affairs.
But the moment they see Quantitative Techniques, they lose confidence.
The problem is often not their ability.
The problem is their perception of the section.
Students imagine that they will need advanced formulas, complicated algebra or difficult calculations.
But that is not what most students need to focus on for CLAT preparation.
For a strong foundation, you need to be comfortable with some basic mathematical concepts.
For example:
• Averages
• Percentages
• Profit and Loss
• Ratio and Proportion
• Time, Speed and Distance
• Time and Work
These are some of the important areas that can help you handle a large number of questions that may arise from Data Interpretation.
You do not need to become an expert in every possible chapter of Mathematics.
You need to understand the basic applications of the important concepts.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭:
“𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬?”
The more relevant question is:
“𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭?”
If you can do that, you can improve significantly in this section.
𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐀 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐈𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
The most important skill in CLAT Quantitative Techniques is Data Interpretation.
Before doing any calculation, you should learn how to read data.
Suppose you are given a table containing the sales figures of different companies over several years.
Before touching your calculator or starting a calculation, ask yourself:
What does each row represent?
What does each column represent?
What is the unit of measurement?
Are the figures given in thousands, lakhs, percentages or actual numbers?
What is increasing?
What is decreasing?
What is being compared?
What exactly is the question asking?
Many mistakes happen because students start calculating before understanding the data.
I recommend the opposite approach.
𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝.
𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝.
𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞.
This simple habit can improve accuracy significantly.
𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐃𝐎 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐒 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑
One of the biggest mistakes I see students make is trying to cover the entire Mathematics syllabus from school.
That is usually unnecessary.
Remember the nature of CLAT.
Quantitative Techniques is only one part of the examination.
It does not carry the same weightage as the entire paper.
Therefore, your preparation should be practical and strategic.
You should focus on the concepts that are most useful for solving questions based on data.
My recommendation is to first build a strong foundation in important topics.
𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐒
Averages are among the most useful concepts in Data Interpretation.
You should understand:
What an average actually represents.
How to calculate an average.
How changes in one value can affect the average.
How to find a total when the average and number of observations are given.
These questions may appear simple.
But in a DI set, the information may be presented indirectly.
You may have to combine data from different parts of a table or passage before applying the average formula.
That is why understanding the concept matters more than memorising a formula.
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐒
Percentages are extremely useful in Data Interpretation.
You may need to calculate:
• Percentage increase
• Percentage decrease
• Percentage contribution
• Percentage change
• Comparison between two values
The most important thing is to understand what the percentage is being calculated in relation to.
For example, students sometimes calculate the difference correctly but divide it by the wrong value.
The answer then becomes incorrect.
So whenever you see a percentage question, pause and ask:
𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭?
That one question can prevent many mistakes.
𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐅𝐈𝐓 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐒
Profit and Loss is another useful area because data-based questions may involve:
• Cost Price
• Selling Price
• Profit Percentage
• Loss Percentage
• Comparison of profits
You do not need complicated calculations.
You need to understand the relationship between these values.
If you know the basics clearly, you can apply them wherever the data requires.
𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
Ratios are frequently useful when comparing quantities.
A Data Interpretation set may give information about different groups, populations, sales figures, expenses or other quantities.
The question may require you to compare them.
Understanding ratios helps you simplify such comparisons.
The important thing is to understand the relationship between the quantities.
Again, do not approach it as a chapter that needs to be memorised.
Think of ratio as a way of comparing one quantity with another.
Once that understanding becomes clear, many questions become easier.
𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄, 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄
Basic knowledge of Time, Speed and Distance can also be useful.
You should understand the relationship between:
Distance
Speed
Time
The formulas themselves are simple.
The challenge is often identifying which information from the DI is relevant to the calculation.
Sometimes the data contains more information than you actually need.
A good student learns to identify the relevant information.
𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚.
𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐊
Time and Work questions are also based on basic mathematical relationships.
The objective is not to learn complicated methods.
First, understand the fundamental concept.
If one person can complete a task in a certain amount of time, what portion of the task is completed in one day?
How does the work change when more people are involved?
How do different rates of work affect the total time?
Once the basic logic is clear, the application becomes easier.
𝐌𝐘 𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐀𝐂𝐇 𝐓𝐎 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐓 𝐐𝐔𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇𝐍𝐈𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐒
My approach to this section is very simple.
I do not believe that every CLAT aspirant needs to become exceptionally good at Mathematics.
That is neither realistic nor necessary.
Instead, I believe students should focus on three things.
𝟏. 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐬
You should know the basic concepts of important topics.
Do not try to memorise hundreds of formulas.
Understand what the formula means and where it can be applied.
𝟐. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐃𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲
A large number of mistakes happen before the calculation even begins.
Students misunderstand the graph, miss a unit, confuse categories or overlook information.
The more carefully you read the data, the fewer mistakes you are likely to make.
𝟑. 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Knowing a percentage formula is not enough.
You should practise identifying when a percentage needs to be used.
Knowing how to calculate an average is not enough.
You should practise finding averages from different forms of information.
𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭 + 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 + 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
That is how I see preparation for this section.
𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐎 𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐀𝐂𝐇 𝐀 𝐃𝐈 𝐒𝐄𝐓
Whenever you encounter a Data Interpretation set, do not immediately start solving.
Follow a structured approach.
𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐏 𝟏 — 𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐀
Read the heading.
Read the labels.
Understand the units.
Identify what each figure represents.
𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐏 𝟐 — 𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
Before looking at the numbers again, understand what the question is actually asking.
Do you need an average?
A percentage?
A ratio?
A difference?
A comparison?
This will help you focus on relevant information.
𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐏 𝟑 — 𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐅𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐕𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐀
Not every question requires every number from the table.
Identify only what you need.
𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐏 𝟒 — 𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐋𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐏𝐓
Now decide which mathematical concept is required.
Use the simplest method that works.
𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐏 𝟓 — 𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐂𝐊 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐖𝐄𝐑
Before moving ahead, quickly ask yourself:
Does this answer make sense?
Is the unit correct?
Did I calculate the percentage using the correct base value?
Did I read the data correctly?
This habit can save valuable marks.
𝐀𝐂𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐘 𝐈𝐒 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍 𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐂
Since Quantitative Techniques forms a relatively smaller part of the CLAT paper, students should be strategic.
You do not need to panic if you find one set difficult.
You do not need to waste an excessive amount of time trying to solve every question.
The objective is to maximise your overall performance in the examination.
This is why question selection and time management are important.
If you understand the DI clearly and can solve the questions efficiently, attempt them confidently.
If a particular question is consuming too much time, learn to make a decision.
Do not allow one difficult calculation to affect the rest of your paper.
𝐀 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐓 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐲 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲.
𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐲.
𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐎𝐍 𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐐𝐔𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇𝐍𝐈𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐒
𝐓𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬
Students sometimes spend disproportionate amounts of time preparing chapters that may not be necessary for their CLAT preparation.
Focus on what is useful.
𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐲
Understand the DI first.
Calculation comes later.
𝐈𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭
Thousands, lakhs, percentages and absolute numbers can completely change the answer.
Always check the unit.
𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐬
Even simple Maths can lead to mistakes when you rush.
Accuracy matters.
𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 “𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬”
This is perhaps the most unnecessary mistake.
You do not need to become a Mathematics expert.
You need to become comfortable with basic applications.
𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐌𝐔𝐂𝐇 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐒 𝐃𝐎 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐓?
My honest answer is:
Less than what many students fear.
But more than zero.
You cannot completely ignore Quantitative Techniques simply because you are uncomfortable with Maths.
At the same time, you do not need to prepare for it as if you are appearing for a specialised Mathematics examination.
Build your basics.
Understand Data Interpretation.
Practice regularly.
Learn to calculate efficiently.
Improve your accuracy.
That is enough to build a strong foundation.
𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬.
𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
𝐐𝐔𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇𝐍𝐈𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐌𝐎𝐂𝐊 𝐓𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐒
Mock tests can help you understand your actual position in this section.
But do not only look at the number of correct answers.
Analyse your mistakes.
Ask yourself:
Did I misunderstand the data?
Did I use the wrong formula?
Did I make a calculation error?
Did I spend too much time?
Did I attempt a question that I should have left?
Did I miss an easy question?
Was my problem Maths or was it interpretation?
This last question is particularly important.
Many students think they are weak in Maths when the real problem is that they are weak at reading data carefully.
Once you identify the actual problem, improvement becomes much easier.
𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒 𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐎𝐅 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐒
If you are someone who has always been afraid of Mathematics, my advice is not to begin by trying to solve difficult questions.
Start small.
First revise the basics.
Then solve simple examples.
Then move to basic Data Interpretation.
Slowly increase the difficulty.
Do not compare your starting point with someone who has been comfortable with Maths for years.
Your objective is improvement.
And Quantitative Techniques is a section where consistent practice can make a significant difference.
